A touching poem by Joan Humphreys - Binfield Resident

Just a red poppy, worn on a coat
With so much meaning behind it
A symbol of suffering
With lives left destroyed
Such great devastation
With cities left void
Through bombing and gunfire and fighting
This poppy pinned to a coat lapel
To remind us, lest we forget

Just someone’s father, left home one day
Leaving his loved ones behind him]
The future unknown
He set out with a stride
To fight for his country
Its honour and pride
With dear in his heart, never turning
This poppy pinned to a coat lapel
To remind us, lest we forget

Just a young lad, someone’s son, went too,
With only his childhood behind him
His plans for the future
He now put on hold
To fight for his freedom
With courage so bold
And maybe a hero returning
This poppy pinned to a coat lapel
To remind us, lest forget

Just someone’s sweetheart, bravely set out
Left his fiancée behind him
Her picture went with him
Kept close to his heart
To be a reminder
That they’d never part
Gunned down in the trenches and dying
This poppy pinned to a coat lapel
To remind us, lest forget

Just a small baby, killed by a bomb
With so little life behind him
Waited and longed for
For nearly a year
Now only a memory
So short and so dear
And those left behind sorely grieving
This poppy pinned to a coat lapel
To remind us, lest forget

Just a red poppy, worn on a coat
With so much meaning behind it
Tells of a war fought
For us in the past
To give us a future
And peace that would last
For this let us strive, without ceasing
This poppy pinned to a coat lapel
To remind us, lest we forget.
